Asian Hair – Fewer Grafts Required?

Hello Dr. Wong. Because Asian hair are thicker in diameter does that mean less hair is needed to transplant in a recipient site versus a hair type that is more fine? For example, the crown region of a Norwood 3 pattern? — J.P.

Thanks for the question. You are correct, hair shaft diameter plays an important role in how many follicular units are required in a given area. In some cases, it takes 3 to 4 more fine hairs to give the same illusion of density that one coarse hair provides. Asian hair is amongst the coarsest and therefore usually requires a smaller number of grafts versus a patient with average or smaller hair shaft diameter.
