Two and half months after my second hair transplant 70-80% of grafts are above the scalp in various sizes but nothing in my 8 mm wide hairline where 700 single hair where implanted at the density of 40 per cm2. Only about 20 hair grew from the beginning on hairline edge (better blood supply ?). What cold be the reason for such a different growth or now growth? Will my 700 singles grow and how it will progress. Second spontanic growth or slow and progresive.I do not have much time left, by 3 and half month all grafts should be above the scalp.

I am also confused by your website transplants timeline definition. In my opinion grafts start to grow from 6 weeks and from 3th month you see visible growth noticed by others. If you do not have hair above the scalp at 3.5 month only very small percentage might grow later. Most people will have lots of hair above the scalp at third month.

Hello J. Thanks for writing. Growth rates vary from patient to patient. General guidelines assume growth at around the 4 month mark. Some patients see growth as early as 2.5 months, some not until closer to 5 months. The singles may come in at a different rate than the bigger grafts and the crown can lag behind the front by a few weeks or months.

At this stage it is too early to be concerned about growth. Things should be taking nice shape around the 5 month mark and improve from there. Clinics that don’t precisely trim grafts, that do not use custom cut blades, or require shaving the recipient site, do run the risk of damaging surrounding (native) hair. There is virtually no risk at Hasson & Wong because transection of existing hair is eliminated by the use of ultra-refined follicular units and custom cut blades made to match the depth of grafts. We shave the recipient area . This allows us to read the exact angle and direction of existing hair and provides a better field of vision to make incisions without causing damage to that native hair.

As for your concerns about post-op appearance: at three weeks post-op most people will have no idea that you have had a hair transplant. Your scalp may appear somewhat red, as if you have a mild sunburn, but even with short hair, any effects of transplantation (redness, acne, flaking), will be mostly obscured by your short hair. With very fair skinned patients, the redness may linger a little longer. At three to four months, the new hair will begin to grow gradually and naturally. Because the change in your appearance is gradual, it will not draw attention to you. Acne in the recipient area, if it occurs at all, will not draw any unneeded attention; nobody will associate a few pimples with a hair transplant. By three months, you’ll look like the "same old you" and your grafts will gradually grow and improve your appearance which each passing month. At 8 months, the result is quite apparent, most growth will have occurred with further growth and maturing of hair grafts between 8 and 12 months. Please see our graft growth timeline.

I had a 500 graft hair transplant about 19 months back in the frontal sides (M area) of my head (in India). My donor area is about 10 cms, right from near the left ear leading down to the base of back hair, near the neck. My scar is not horizontal as in usual case but actually vertical with only a slight inclination. Doc, my feeling is that at times I feel tightness/numbness near the scar area. Will there be any case of nerve entrapment possible in such a scar? Sometimes I also feel my left area of my head is compressed making it difficult to breathe through left nostril. Is it psychological or is there a need for rectification/scar revision? My scar is slightly bumpy at the edges. My left part has more transplanted hair comparatively. — A.B.

Thanks for your question. It is natural for the area to feel tight with some numbness for up to several months after the hair transplant. I would have to see photos to make any comments about the angle of the donor area scar and the growth (or lack of growth) you are experiencing. It is impossible to say whether a scar revision would improve matters without more information. It is doubtful that the tightness in the area is causing the restriction you are feeling when breathing through your left nostril (although again, without examining you I am only guessing).
