Propecia and Shedding

I am 25 years old an I have just started finasteride for a receding hairline (2 weeks). I have noticed significant increased shedding compared to before. Is this common? Should I stop the medication? — A.W.

You say your taking finasteride for a receding hairline. Propecia may stop or slow recession in your hairline, but it really is most beneficial in the crown. With many men it will make no significant difference in the frontal hairline, though it is still worth taking because for some it at least slows frontal recession. Just be aware that it is generallly not effective in hairlines. Propecia, is however, very effective for stopping and growing hair in the crown. As for the shedding you are experiencing: this is common when men start Propecia and likely nothing to worry about. Read the excerpt below from hairlosstalk.com.

SHEDDING: Shedding is a sign that Propecia is working. Many men lose out on the benefits of Propecia by freaking out and dropping treatment when they think their hair is getting worse. When your follicles respond to Propecia, they shut down their current growth cycle and begin to create a new, healthier hair. The period is known as the shedding phase. It can begin during the first few months and last a month or so. Ride it out. That is all we can tell you. We all went through it, and those who persevere will see success. — excerpt from http://www.hairlosstalk.com/hair-loss-treatments/propecia/

Wait and see what happens. If the shedding continues, consult your prescribing doctor. As always, this is not intended as medical advice. If you have any questions regarding this or any medication, always consult your physician.
