I have been looking into hair transplant techniques for several months now to see if I could benefit from such a procedure. I am a 28 year old male and have noticed a slight recession of my hairline and temple area over the past few years. However, this recession is only noticeable on one side and I was therefore wondering if it is possible to undergo a technique such as FUE to match the receding side with the side that hasn’t receded yet? I have tried propecia for a year to stop any further hairloss and I’m currently using minoxidil but it doesn’t seem to have encouraged regrowth in that area. Furthermore, the hair over the rest of my scalp is still relatively dense so I don’t think I will benefit from being on finasteride at the moment.

I’m just looking to thicken the temple slightly and wondering how to go about this. Obviously this procedure will not require too many grafts and although I have ample donor hair I’m assuming such a procedure may not be worth your while due to the relatively small number of grafts required. However, I would desperately like to thicken up the temple area and I welcome any comments you may have on this subject. — R.E.

First of all, even though you may not be noticing any thinning in the rest of your scalp, the Propecia isn’t a bad idea. Especially if you are going to have a procedure, it may help prevent or slow further recession behind the transplanted grafts. This can be assessed and evaluated at the time of your surgery. Fue can be used for a procedure this small. It is our opinion that if a patient is going the fue route, the very small procedures may make the most sense. We still believe that our strip method will provide the best yield and overall result. Most fue results we have seen have been less than desirable. While we are known for our world record mega sessions, some of our most technically impressive work comes from smaller procedures. Angle direction control and density among other things are still critical in producing an outstanding result. Even small procedures are worth are while as long as a cosmetic improvement can be achieved and most important, the patient is happy. Keep in mind that if a small procedure is performed at this time, you need to understand the possibility more work may be necessary down the road if recession continues behind the transplanted area. As far as fue versus strip for this procedure, unless you plan to shave your head, a small scar hidden by your hair is a fair price to pay for a result that will grow, look natural and make you happy.

Dear R.A. Thanks for the question. As of this writing, our hair transplant costs are $5/graft for the first 2000 grafts then $3/graft (USD) for each graft thereafter in the same surgical session. As for comparing, it really is difficult. You have to compare the apples with apples. It like buying anything: you get what you pay for, but more than that, cost is dependent upon many factors, including the skill and experience of the doctor and his team and the method of hair transplantation being used. Thanks for writing. Doctor Jerry Wong and I have been performing hair transplants together since 1997. Certainly, the Hasson & Wong web presence was not as strong back then, so it is not a surprise that you did not find us. Hello Doctor Wong. Can you describe exactly what scalp laxity exercises are supposed to accomplish? I was told to do them in the months prior to my hair transplant surgery. Can exercises really make a difference in the end results? I’ve seen drawings and photos that show different ways of doing them. What is the right way?

Scalp exercises are designed to increase the vertical mobility of the donor area. Increasing this area allows the doctor to remove a wider piece of tissue and close the incision under low tension. The wider the piece of tissue harvested, the greater the yield. For most cases, the larger the number of grafts, the better the result. Some patients start scalp stretching exercises up to six months prior to surgery. Your scalp can never be too loose for a hair transplant regardless of the number of grafts being harvested. For patients with an extremely tight scalp, the exercises are of greater importance. Depending on how aggressive the patient is with the exercises, generally we like patients to perform the exercises for at least two months prior to surgery, especially if their scalp is a little on the tight side. These exercises really can make a difference in increasing the vertical mobility and therefore increasing the width of the strip that can be safely excised.

The keys to the success of the exercises are consistency, diligence, and ensuring that the scalp movement is perpendicular to the donor area as depicted in the photos and videos
